Steppin' In It
CD Release Party
Saturday, May 10th, 8pm
InsideOut Gallery, TC
I've been following Steppin' In It since they were what seemed to be an interesting young jam band back in 2000. They were that and a whole lot more--over the years I've found more and more reasons to appreciate this band: of course, they're very cool guys. They're friendly, down-to-earth, concerned about the land, generous with their time, easy to work with, and they always do their damnedest to send everyone home happy. They've also shown a lot of facets to their collective music talents over the years: Josh Davis has turned into a formidable songwriter; the multi-instrumental talents of the Wilson brothers always impress and adds lots of variety and interest to the music settings; the sheer exhuberance of Dominic Suchyta (or Dominic de Steppininit, as we like to call him); the breadth of their musical interests.
I am very happy the boys are still at it and Steppin' In It after all these years. This latest CD has been in our rotation now for a couple of weeks and it definitely merits your attention (and your money!). It brings together all of those things I mention above into a package of (loosely) thematically connected songs which, to this year, emphasizes our connections/similarities with the 1930s--an era much more challenging than this in many ways, but one that brought out a spirit of solidarity and creativity that I think Steppin' In It would very much like to inspire in us.
Let them give it a shot, come on down for a night of fine music and celebration this Saturday night at the InideOut!

Last Days for Music at Poppycocks |

Below is an email I received last night from Don Julin informing us that the music at Poppycock's will soon be coming to an end. Weekend music at Poppycocks, most closely associated with the Neptune Quartet, but which included many many other artists, has been one of the highlights of the TC music scene for years.
I remember Seamus Shinners mentioning to me some years ago that Poppycocks was where he took his own visiting artists to impress them with the quality of the scene up here. And impressed they were. It's really a shame to see this go away. One can only hope that something similar will land at another downtown venue soon.
from Don:
Since 2002 Poppycocks has been the host for Traverse City's eclectic music scene
encompassing jazz, blues, folk, original and experimental music. It is with
great sorrow that I am informing you all that this weekend (May 9,10) will be
the last 2 nights of live music at Poppycocks. Friday - The Don Julin Quartet,
Sat - Rachel Borovik. The powers that be have decided to take the establishment
in a different direction which does not include live music.
I would like to thank everyone that came out during the last 5 years for
late night at Poppycocks. I would also like to thank Mark, John, Whitney and the
entire staff for a great run that lasted 5 years. Below is a list of many (I am
sure to forget someone) of the very talented musicians that filled the room with
great sounds.

Thanks to everyone who gave during our Spring on-air pledgedrive!
Spring Fundraiser has been very successful so far: we raised almost $35,000. That's more than we've ever raised on-air in a regular fundraiser.
We're now working on chasing down the last $5,000 so we can reach our fundraising goal of $40,000 for this Spring. We'll be doing a mail-out for folks we may have missed and we've got a long list of underwriting prospects to speak to over the next couple of weeks. So we should be able to report reaching the goal in the next few weeks!
Thanks again to everyone who has helped out community public radio in Northwest Michigan!
If you are still considering giving, here's a few arguments in favor:
- •75% of our revenue comes from contributions from listeners like you.
- •We don't get support from corporations or the government. We depend on you!
- •We run on a $90,000 budget each year, which is far less than most public radio stations.
- •The station is operated by dozens of volunteers of all ages from across our listening area.
Please give: Click on Support in the menu above. Community radio needs support from listeners like you to keep going!
